Stage 1: Hiking from Source to Newtown (46km)

My adventure begins at the source of the River Severn, nestled in the Cambrian Mountains of Wales. Surrounded by the raw beauty of the Welsh countryside, I’ll trace the river as it begins its journey to the sea. The hike will take me through serene valleys, dense woodlands, and rugged terrain, offering glimpses of wildlife and the peaceful sounds of nature. The journey will culminate in the quaint town of Newtown, a place filled with charm, history, and a warm community atmosphere. This first leg will be both a physical challenge and a chance to connect deeply with the natural world.

Stage 2: Kayaking from Newtown to Gloucester (242km)

Switching gears, I’ll take to the water, kayaking through the winding course of the River Severn. This stage will bring me through vibrant towns like Shrewsbury, with its medieval streets and historic architecture, and Worcester, home to its magnificent cathedral. Along the way, I’ll navigate gentle meanders, tranquil stretches, and occasional rapids that will test my skills and resolve. The journey will offer countless opportunities to witness the changing landscapes, from rolling hills to urban settings. As I approach Gloucester, the sight of its iconic cathedral rising above the cityscape and the lively docks bustling with activity will serve as a triumphant conclusion to this watery expedition.

Stage 3: Cycling from Gloucester to Battery Point, Portishead (80km)

For the final stage, I’ll hop on my bike and follow the river’s course as it broadens into the vast Severn Estuary. This leg will take me past the impressive Severn Bridge and along paths that reveal the dramatic tidal flats and sweeping views of the estuary. The ride will be invigorating, blending moments of peaceful cycling with the thrill of nearing the journey’s end. As I pedal toward Battery Point in Portishead, where the Severn meets the open sea, I’ll reflect on the incredible variety of landscapes, towns, and experiences that the river has provided. This final destination, with its stunning coastal views, will be a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure.
